What we know so far about the Uvalde, Texas school shooting

A lone gunman opened fire at an elementary school in the small town of Uvalde, Texas, killing 21 people. The victims included at least 19 students and two adults.

According to local law enforcement officials, the gunman was slain by police.

According to the school calendar, the attack at Robb Elementary happened just two days before summer break ended on May 26. Around 600 children attended the school, which taught students in grades 2 through 4.

Here's what we know so far.

Uvalde is a tiny town in Texas

According to census data, Uvalde, Texas, has a population of roughly 16,000 people, the majority of whom are Hispanic. It is located 85 miles west of San Antonio.

It's the kind of city where "interconnections are dense," and no one expected a mass shooting at the local high school, according to Marc Duvoisin, editor-in-chief of the nearby San Antonio Express-News.

Matthew McConaughey, the Oscar winner, was born and raised in Uvalde.

Uvalde was the location of the shooter

The gunman, who was 18 years old at the time, graduated from Uvalde High School on Friday. He acted alone, according to authorities.

Following a briefing from Texas Rangers, state Sen. Roland Gutierrez told CNN Tuesday evening that the shooter purchased at least two assault firearms shortly after his 18th birthday.

During his interview, Gutierrez stated, "He had no issue acquiring those guns."

During a press conference, Texas Governor Greg Abbott stated that the gunman is thought to have abandoned his vehicle and entered the school with a firearm.

Before coming to Robb Elementary, the suspect allegedly shot his grandma, according to him.

The school shooter was killed by a Border Patrol agent

After engaging the gunman, local authorities requested assistance. According to a Border Patrol source, a tactical squad arrived to the location and one of its agents shot and killed the suspect. The school year is over and other events canceled

According to Superintendent Hal Harrell of the Uvalde Consolidated School District, the local high school graduation has been postponed for the time being. On Tuesday, he held a second press conference.
Following the shooting, Harrell reiterated that the district's school year is over and that all additional events have been canceled.
Students and their families will receive grief counseling at the local civic center beginning Wednesday morning, according to Harrell.

Local hospitals respond and call for blood donors

Robb is being targeted. According to Tom Nordwick, the hospital's CEO, two of the youngsters admitted to the hospital were deceased.

According to Nordwick, several of the victims had to be moved to trauma clinics in San Antonio for further care.

Local hospitals and other organizations issued a request for blood donations early Tuesday evening in response to the tragedy.

San Antonio's University Health tweeted, "Consider donating blood if you're seeking for ways to help. Your contribution will help us ensure that supplies are provided as soon as possible for the victims of this horrific shooting."

The hospital stated that their donor room is open throughout the week.

A blood drive will be held at the Herby Ham Community Center on Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., local time.

Biden and politicians respond

Following the tragedy, Biden ordered flags to be flown at half-staff at the White House and other government facilities.

Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut, a Democrat, addressed the Senate floor shortly after the tragedy occurred. The 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy in Murphy's home state of Connecticut claimed the lives of 26 individuals, the majority of whom were children aged six and seven.

Following that occurrence, Murphy has made a strong case for gun regulation.

Murphy pleaded, "What exactly are we doing? We have another Sandy Hook on our hands, just days after a shooter entered into a grocery store and gunned down African American customers. What exactly are we doing?"

He begged his colleagues to pass gun control measures right away.
